3 Types of LinkedIn posts that get engagement every time
Jul 15, 2024When speaking at events, one of the top questions I get is: How can I get more engagement on LinkedIn?
It can be frustrating to spend time posting only to feel like your content is invisible.
The number one reason people quit posting on LinkedIn is losing motivation due to perceived low results.
I get it.
So, I want to offer you some practical tips to help you get more engagement.
-
Personal and relatable stories
-
LinkedIn polls
-
Motivational quotes
These three types of posts will help you build momentum. Without momentum, you're posts will go nowhere.
Getting Engagement is About Momentum
First off, engagement is about building momentum. Without momentum, it will continually be difficult to get engagement. But once you build it, you'll find it easier to get consistent interaction.
How?
It's simple.
People who engage with your content will see more of you in their feed. In other words, someone who likes or comments on your post today will see you more often in their feed in the future.
To create this momentum, you need to produce content that people can easily engage with, setting the stage for them to see the things you really want to share. Let's break it down into three essential types of content: content to attract, content to retain, and content to convert. Today, we focus on content to attract.
1. Personal and Relatable Business Stories
This might sound a bit cringe, but personal stories and relatable experiences work wonders. I'm not suggesting you share sob stories or broadcast your personal drama. Instead, talk about life lessons and experiences from your career that others can relate to. These posts help people connect with you over shared experiences. If you’ve never tried this before, it can feel a little uncomfortable. But as you’ll notice, influencers do this all the time because it works.
Some tips:
- Selfies work really well.
- Share relatable stories from your career.
- Don’t just share facts; tell people how it felt.
2. Build Your Engagement with Polls
A little-known secret is that polls can help you build momentum. I know three influencers who use simple polls to grow their accounts and create engagement. I use polls a couple of times per week to do the same. The key is simplicity.
Polls might not get the best impressions, but they make it easy for people to engage with you and help them get into the habit of interacting with your content. One poll won’t do it; you may have to run a series of polls over a 2-3 week period. Polls can turn connections into commenters.
Some tips:
- Keep the polls simple.
- Make the answers easy.
- Keep the copy short.
3. Leverage Motivational Quotes
One of the biggies to build and sustain your engagement is motivational quotes. Entrepreneurs like Steven Bartlett use them all the time because people love to engage with positive and inspiring messages. The types of posts are easy to create, easy to post and over time build your engagement. The key with all three of these types of posts is not to think of them as a one-off, but a part of your schedule.
Some tips:
- Choose quotes that parallel your profession or experience.
- Explain why you like the quote and what it means to you.
- Keep the caption short, simple, and conversational.
💥BONUS: I’ve collected a Google Drive folder full of motivational quotes. Feel free to browse and take a look. Remember, engagement is a marathon, not a sprint.
Once you get going and you have momentum behind your account, you can do less of these, but if engagement is low on your profile, you want to build it by doing more lighter and easier-to-engage type content.
I'd recommend for at least 90 days keeping things light and build your engagement using 3 posts per week, once you get consistent traction, dial them back a little.
